The Florida Lottery believes in the value of mentoring and realizes the impact that it
can make in the life of a child. This principle is manifested through its steadfast
commitment to the Florida Mentoring Partnership by motivating Lottery employees to
mentor in schools throughout the state of Florida.
The Florida Lottery Mentor Program supports the Florida Mentoring Partnership and has been
recognized since 1999 for outstanding
leadership and dedication to mentoring.
The Florida Family Literacy initiative is managed by the non-profit Volunteer Florida Foundation.
The purpose of the Florida Family Literacy initiative is to establish literacy as a value in every family.
In Florida strengthening families is a top priority, beginning with a focus on family literacy -- helping programs that encompass reading, math, life skills and parenting skills, helping individuals earn their GEDs, and helping children start school ready to learn.
The Florida Lottery supports the efforts to establish literacy as a value in every family by emphasizing reading through the mentor program, conducting book drives and by sponsoring literacy events.
In September 2001, Governor Jeb Bush signed Executive Order 01-260 creating the Just Read, Florida! initiative. The initiative was designed to guide changes at every level of education that has an impact on reading outcomes in Florida schools. It also provides for parent, business and community involvement. The ultimate goal of the reading initiative is that every child read at or above grade level by 2012.
The executive order directed the Florida Department of Education to work with local school districts, educators, parents and community members to review current reading programs.
Governor Bush believes reading is the most powerful skill a child can learn. He said reading not only influences our success in school, but it improves the overall quality of our life. Through the Just Read, Florida! initiative and with the help of our schools, families, mentors and communities, together we will strive to put all Floridians in a position to become successful readers so they may flourish in life.
