POWERBALL® REDESIGN: BETTER OVERALL ODDS OF WINNING A PRIZE,
10X FEATURE ADDED WHEN STARTING JACKPOTS ARE LOWER
~ Changes Should Continue To Deliver Big Jackpots, Bump Up Other Significant Prizes ~
TALLAHASSEE - An updated version of the POWERBALL game is about to debut, with changes designed to continue to deliver big jackpots while upping some other significant prizes in the game. Sales in the redesigned game will begin on Sunday, October 4, 2015, and the first drawing with the new features will be on Wednesday, October 7, 2015.
Tickets will still cost $2 per play, and there will be better overall odds of winning any prize and a big jump up to $50,000 for the game's third prize level. Plus, a new 10X multiplier will become available when the jackpot is $150 million or less, giving players who purchase Power Play® the chance to multiply most winnings by 10 times.
"The Florida Lottery is all about excitement and keeping the thrill alive for our players," said Florida Lottery Interim Secretary Tom Delacenserie. "We know our players like big jackpots because Florida routinely leads the country in POWERBALL sales. Our players also like the chance to play for other great prizes, and Florida has produced more POWERBALL winners than any other U.S. lottery since joining the game in 2009. These new game changes will allow jackpots to grow; better odds will mean more winners; and higher prizes offered at some of the lower levels."
The updates include changes to both sets of POWERBALL numbers used in the drawings. The first five numbers will be drawn from a set of 69 white balls (up from 59) and the Powerball from a pool of 26 (down from 35) red balls, resulting in better overall odds of winning a prize with extended odds of winning the jackpot.
POWERBALL jackpots will continue to start at $40 million and the game's second prize for matching the five white ball numbers but missing the Powerball will still be $1 million. However, the game's third prize level is getting a five-fold increase from $10,000 to $50,000 for matching four white ball numbers and the Powerball.
The game's Power Play add-on feature will also get a big expansion with a 10X multiplier available when the jackpot is at lower levels. Under the new design, the Power Play option will multiply most prizes (except the jackpot and Match 5 level) by 2X, 3X, 4X, 5X or 10X whenever the game's advertised jackpot is $150 million or less. Only the first four multipliers will be in play when the jackpot is higher than that. The Match 5 prize of $1 million will continue to double to $2 million with the Power Play added.
